A brief overview of the relationship between the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT) of waterborne resins.
Typically, the higher the glass transition temperature (Tg) of a waterborne resin—such as an aqueous acrylic emulsion or an aqueous polyurethane dispersion—the higher its minimum film‑forming temperature, and the poorer its film‑forming performance at room temperature, requiring a greater amount of film‑forming aid. The underlying reason is well known: for film formation to occur, the particles of the waterborne resin must coalesce. This necessitates that the resin particles possess sufficient mobility at the film‑forming temperature, meaning that the latter should exceed the Tg of the resin particles. However, in many waterborne resin products, the Tg of the resulting film is higher than the minimum film‑forming temperature, thus contradicting this commonly observed trend. Several factors account for this phenomenon.

Water-Based Coatings Knowledge Handbook (Part II)
Waterborne coatings are currently a frequent question on the minds of many Chinese paint manufacturers. According to surveys, numerous large and medium-sized coating producers have already begun developing waterborne formulations. In particular, driven by demand for export‑oriented products, the development of waterborne industrial coatings has become especially urgent. This handbook on waterborne coatings compiles fundamental knowledge essential for their formulation, with the hope of supporting your efforts in this area.

Water-Based Coatings Knowledge Manual (Volume 1)
Globally, environmentally friendly waterborne coatings represent a key focus in both the research and development and the marketing of coatings. This trend is driven, on the one hand, by consumer demand for eco‑friendly products as a means of safeguarding their health and well‑being. On the other hand, government regulations on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) serve as another major catalyst for the growth of waterborne coatings.
